How do you install ESXi on Dell PowerEdge T130??
SOLVED: After hours on the phone with Dell support, I figured out the problem was as stupid as a bad connection with the USB port. If I wiggled it a little and powered on, it worked. I guess due to the slim nature of the USB drive I bought, it didn't have a good connection with the port. Although I did try multiple USB drives and they had varying results which leads me to believe it's a bad USB port design by Dell.
I'm having trouble installing ESXi 6.5 on a PowerEdge T130 that I just bought a few weeks ago. I've successfully installed it on a Dell PowerEdge T20 and T110 II, but the T130 is proving to be problematic. I used Rufus to make a bootable USB drive with ESXi 6.5 and tried to plug it into the internal USB port. The USB drive doesn't appear in the boot menu. Only the main HDD and the NIC. I also tried plugging the USB in every USB port on the tower (internal, front, back ports) -- no difference. I also tried a few different USB drives.
Here are screenshots of the boot manager interface.
I also found that unplugging the ethernet cable from the tower affected the boot options.
The past, present and future are yours to command. Empire earth download. Carry out a night attack with a column of Panzer tanks.
- unplugged the ethernet cable from the tower
- plugged a USB drive (with the ESXi installer) in one of the back USB ports
- plugged an empty USB drive into the internal USB port
After booting into the System Setup, the Hard Disk Drive Sequence showed the main hard drive and now the USB drive plugged into the back also, but NOT the USB drive plugged in the internal USB port. I was able to boot off the back USB drive and start the ESXi installation. The ESXi installation detected the internal USB port and I was able to select it as the destination to install ESXi on. But after removing the back USB drive and rebooting, I still can't see the internal USB port in the System Setup so I can't boot off it.
I'm must be missing something. Is there maybe another setting in the System Setup that I'm missing to be able to boot from the internal USB port?? Seems strange that I can boot from the back USB ports, but not from the internal USB port, which, from my understanding, is the sole purpose of that internal USB port -- to boot from an OS installed on the internal USB drive.
I see mentions of iDRAC and Lifecycle Controller in the boot sequence and System Setup, but I've never used them before. Is there a specific way to install ESXi on a T130??
